Young people and care leavers

BAC will assist young people and care leavers in cultivating the skills and confidence required for independent living.

Whatever their background.

They may have experienced challenges at home, come directly from the care system, or escaped situations involving abuse, violence, or exploitation. Some may also grapple with mental health issues, substance abuse, or a history of offending.
We believe that with the appropriate support, they have the potential to accomplish remarkable achievements.

Our approach

With over four decades of experience, we have been dedicated to empowering individuals to make informed choices, take charge of their lives, and move forward through our can-do approach. Our services are tailored, co-created, and delivered collaboratively in partnership with healthcare providers.

Significant to our strategy for young people is our Life Skills Programme, jointly developed by our clients and staff. Aligned with the Government & Care Leavers & Strategy, it emphasizes skill-building and confidence-building across various domains crucial for assessing a young person & readiness for independent living. These incorporate emotional well-being, skill development, education and employment, health, financial literacy, relationships, and living arrangements.

In addition, we support each young person:

  • Encouraging them to aspire and believe in their potential for success.
  • Treating them as equals, with clear expectations, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Providing care and compassion, fostering trust through consistent support.
  • Recognizing and fostering strong, healthy, and safe relationships.
  •  Facilitating skill-building, training access, and employment opportunities.
  •  Addressing negative behaviour patterns with fairness, consistency, and openness

Our services

We possess expertise in providing a variety of services tailored to young people, including supported living, hostels, floating support, services for young parents, and semi-independent living arrangements.

BAC, as an organization, has set an operational vision and target to support over 1200 young people aged between 16 and 25 annually through an extensive array of services including:

Semi Independent Living Services

Young individuals in or transitioning out of care frequently require extra assistance before being prepared for independent living.

We offer various semi-independent accommodation services tailored to young people in or transitioning out of care, including young parents with their children and Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). Our semi-independent accommodation services operate on a spot purchase basis, allowing us to collaborate with any local authority to deliver suitable support and housing to
individuals aged 16-21. Depending on the individual’s needs, we may extend our services to individuals up to the age of 24.

Our services are flexible to accommodate the evolving support requirements of young individuals, and we can provide a variety of flexible support packages. Our
teams collaborate closely with the young person’s social worker or personal advisor to fulfil our commitment to support local authorities in their corporate parenting
responsibilities.

We adopt a trauma-informed and person-centred approach to support, empowering young individuals to co-create our services—from planning activities to defining
service agreements to choosing décor. To learn more or to make a referral, please visit the Young People referral section to connect with a member of our team

Supported housing accommodation.

The majority of the young individuals we assist benefit from our supported housing services, which encompass hostel accommodations, step-down programs, and floating support services.

Young people may arrive at our hostels after experiencing homelessness, such as sleeping on the streets or sofa surfing, due to issues at home or family breakdowns. They may have also transitioned directly from care, foster placements, or young offender institutions.

We assist each young individual in regaining stability, accessing necessary specialist services, and transitioning to independent accommodation. This typically occurs within two years, often less, and commonly involves the private rental sector.

Numerous young individuals residing in our accommodation-based services transition to our step-down or visiting support services, which are frequently located nearby or within the
same local area.

In these settings, young individuals who are prepared to embrace greater independence reside in shared accommodations and receive assistance from our visiting teams. These services serve as a valuable intermediary step for individuals progressing from accommodation-based support to independent living.

We assist young people residing in various settings, whether with friends, relatives, or in shared accommodations. For many, this marks their initial experience with independent
living.

We offer practical assistance in managing and upkeeping their homes, ensuring they feel safe, secure, and confident.

Our specialized services cater to women from pregnancy to parenthood. Our teams assist each young parent in navigating the practical and emotional hurdles of raising a child, establishing support networks, and cultivating healthy relationships that contribute to the well-being of the entire family.
